Special Permit Areas

We take you where others can't

Wilderness 4WD Adventures holds a number of Restricted and Exclusive Permits that allow us to take you away from the main tourist trail and into some of the more remote areas of the Top End. This way you can immerse yourself in magical surroundings, hiking into beautiful secluded waterfalls where you can really sense the timelessness of ancient landscapes dating hundreds of millions of years.

Wilderness has secured these Special Permits over other companies because of our commitment to low impact group sizes, nature based tourism and our willingness to work with and respect the wishes of local Aboriginal people.

We have two Exclusive Permits to the Upper Tolmer Falls and Upper Sandy Creek Falls in Litchfield National Park, that is, we are the only commercial tour operator allowed access.

In Kakadu National Park we have two Restricted Permits with Wilderness being only one of three companies with scheduled access to Koolpin Gorge and one of two companies authorised to visit Graveside Gorge.

Litchfield National Park

Upper Tolmer Falls

Tolmer Falls is a delicate waterfall right at the head of a picturesque gorge. The base of the falls is home to colonies of rare Ghost Bats and Orange Horseshoe Bats. Swimming here is not permitted. However, an easy and scenic 2km return walk takes you to the Upper Tolmer Falls where you can go for a secluded swim and relax by the water. This area is also closed to the public so it is a destination where we can guarantee that you will be the only people there. The Upper Fall is a small waterfall that flows all year round with a deep narrow gorge for swimming in total solitude.

Upper Sandy Creek Falls

Sandy Creek Falls (Tjaynera Falls) is only accessible by 4WD which limits the numbers immediately. A great return walk through open valleys littered with Paper barks rewards you with a lovely and un-crowded plunge pool to refresh the senses. A walk further up to Upper Sandy Creek Falls offers some fantastic views where you can relax in privacy in the secluded waterfalls.

Kakadu National Park

Koolpin Gorge

Koolpin Gorge (Jarrangbarnmi) is only accessible by 4 wheel drive as the road is rough and bumpy. You will be pleasantly rewarded with a beautiful gorge, waterfalls and plunge pools to swim in as well as some of Kakadu's most spectacular scenery afforded from the top by the waterhole. Koolpin Gorge would definitely be one of the most scenic destinations in Kakadu National Park with landscapes that are simply breathtaking.

Graveside Gorge

Graveside Gorge offers some of Kakadu's most rugged and diverse environments. It is unmarked on most maps and only accessible via a rough 4WD track. It features some beautiful walks, gorges, waterfalls and plunge pools to chill out in. The walk up to the very end of the gorge is definitely worthwhile but be prepared for some challenging climbs over rocks and boulders, great stuff!! Graveside Gorge would be one of the most isolated destinations that can be visited in Kakadu National park and well off the beaten track.

Moline Rockholes

Moline Rockholes is a restricted area within Kakadu that has a number of picturesque cascades that descend to a small waterfall with a plunge pool perfect for cooling off in. We visit Moline Rockholes on our Greenseason programs.
